The large Queen Lily Soap factory building, known as Pioneer Square today, stands at 555 De Haro Street on Potrero Hill in San Francisco. The business was established in 1852 by James P. Dyer; a Black pioneer who came to San Francisco in 1850 from New Bedford, Massachusetts during the height of the Gold Rush. Mr. Dyer was a member of San Francisco's Black community which fought structural racism, often successfully, in California. He has been called the only Black antebellum manufacturer in the West.
